The origins of whisky production in Tomatin are hard to be precise about – prior to the opening of the formal distillery which operates today, there is reason to believe that whisky production, albeit illegal, has been an important part of life in the area around Tomatin since the 1700s.
The English Whisky Co. Came to life in 2005 when James Nelstrop applied for planning permission for the first registered whisky distillery in England for over a century. 15 years later the distillery is dedicated to the production of the very finest single malt whisky, avoiding the temptation to branch out into gins and rums. The pair of copper pot stills are perfectly made for the production of single malt whisky.

The distillery was purchased by John Grant in 1865 as an adjunct to a farm and continues in family ownership under the direction of John L. S. Grant (Chairman and 5th generation) and his son George (Sales Director).
Glenfarclas, from the Gaelic ‘Valley of the Green Grassland’, nestles at the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside. Crystal clear, the water bubbles up from the underlying granite on the slopes of the Speyside mountain to supply the distillery below.
The story of Mackmyra starts in Sälen, a ski resort in the west of Sweden, in March 1998. Eight friends met in a snow-covered cabin, each bringing a bottle of whisky with them to share on their holiday. There conversations one evening turned to whisky and the fact that whilst there was a lot of interest and love for single malt whisky in Sweden, there were no Swedish distilleries to make the golden nectar. That night, the eight decided to create a Swedish whisky.
After many rounds of discussion, emails, WhatsApp group conversations about the company name we went for Henstone which reflects the names of the two family’s homes – Alex and I live in an ex-public house called The Hen and Chickens whilst Shane and Alison live in Stone House (after which the brewery is also named).

We have arguably some of the best red wine barrels in the world in our ‘backyard’ and with the quality of ingredients and materials available within a day’s drive from Melbourne, we tried something new and never looked back.
