The English Whisky Co. came to life in 2005 when James Nelstrop applied for planning permission for the first registered whisky distillery in England for over a century.
15 years later the distillery is dedicated to the production of the very finest single malt whisky, avoiding the temptation to branch out into gins and rums. The pair of copper pot stills are perfectly made for the production of Single Malt Whisky.
Based at Roudham in Norfolk, this site has everything needed to made great whisky. Beneath the distillery lies the Breckland Aquifer, the huge body of water that provides both our crystal clear water for cutting the whisky for bottling and also all our cooling needs as the water comes out of the ground at a consistent 11deg. East Anglia is famed for its Barley production and we use this barley after it has been malted by Crisps who are also based in Norfolk; they also keep the maltiing barley that is grown on the Nelstrop family farms separate in the malting process, so we can tell which field the barley came from and even who drove the combine used to harvest it.

The distillery welcomes upwards of 80k guests a year with daily tours, an onsite bistro and plenty of space include a river walk, conference rooms etc.
The English Whisky co. produces mainly single malt whisky that is peated or unpeated and then matured in bourbon, rum, sherry or virgin oak casks. The mature whisky is bottled on site and branded The English. In addition to this the distillery also created a few very short runs of complex grain whiskies each year, these short run exceptional whiskies are sold under The Norfolk brand.

The English is exported to 23 countries around the world. Customers can not only choose from the core range of Original and Smokey but also a regular release program of small batch single malt whiskies that show off the use of different wood and different age profiles. Single Cask releases are also produced, normally at the request of individual importers, allowing importer the opportunity to promote whiskies unique to them.
In 2021 there are believed to be 38 English Whisky producers in various stages of planning or production and The English Whisky Co. is proud to be the founding father of this growing industry.
