Deanston Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 18 Year Old
It’s been a while since we delivered a traditional Scotch to Summerton Whisky Club members, with 2018 the last time we shared something of this age… It gives us great pleasure to be able to share Deanston’s 18 Year Old. Aged in second fill Bourbon casks and finished in first fill Bourbon barrels from Kentucky, this is a fantastic example of Deanston whisky. It gets its light character from upward sloping lyne arms (the connection between still and condensing system)
In 1785 the Deanston Cotton Mill opened its doors on the banks of the River Teith. The mill flourished over the 19th century and saw the owners build the village of Deanston for their workers – a school, roads, gas works, waterwheels and suchlike. When the cotton industry struggled in the 20th century and with a whisky boom underway in Scotland, the plentiful supply of fresh soft water and energy on site established the Mill as the perfect candidate to convert to a distillery. Production started in the 60s and saw the first Deanston Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky released in 1974. However, not immune from the downturn in the whisky industry, the distillery was mothballed from 1982 for eight years.

Open ever since, the Mill’s locality and infrastructure has been key to Deanston’s success. The distillery is powered by the River Teith, which also supplies water to the Distillery. The Weaving Shed, built in the 1830s, features three feet of soil insulation and metre thick walls. These attributes help to maintain constant conditions – the perfect environment to mature whisky.
