White Peak Distillery is the first full-scale, craft distillery in the Peak District, producing the regions first whisky.

Our core whisky is a lightly peated single malt – a style unique in the growing English whisky scene. Our first release of Wire Works Whisky is planned for early 2022. We also produce a range of small batch gins under the Shining Cliff brand and a cask aged Derbyshire Rum.

The Peak District region came to global prominence in the 18th century as the heartland of the industrial revolution. In 2001, the Derwent Valley was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s here, in a former Wire Works, where we’ve established the Distillery.

Derbyshire and the Peak District were at the heart of the dream from the beginning. We just needed to find the right location which we were fortunate to do early on. The former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works by a river and in an ancient woodland is an amazing location, with a rich history, so much so that the valley in which we make our spirits was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2001.

Everything we’ve done in the realisation of the Distillery and our spirits always comes back to our location – from the visitor experience, to the yeasts we use in our whisky and the botanicals we use in our gins. Once we’d made a start we never looked back. Once we had our home, the belief and momentum started to build and continues today.

Our forebears built a reputation on innovation, using the best materials & equipment, making things the proper way and making things to last. This DNA is at the heart of our approach to whisky-making. We have adopted the Johnson & Nephew motto Virtus Patienta Veritas meaning Virtue of Patience and Truth, which informs how we create our spirits – allowing time to cultivate flavour, never taking shortcuts nor adding sugar, colour or other additives.

Our uncompromising pursuit of flavour is built into the Distillery design and the way we make whisky. We strip back each stage of whisky-making to look at where we can create and develop flavour. We use a combination of yeasts, one of which is a live yeast sourced from a local brewery. We combine with long fermentation to prioritise flavour before our spirit goes into our selected casks.

What’s more, due to the space we enjoy at the Wire Works, our whisky can be distilled, matured and bottled on site; a full lifecycle of Derbyshire provenance. Everybody on the White Peak Distillery team is passionate about creating authentic spirits with regional provenance and establishing a unique visitor destination.

Our gins have won international awards, and our ageing single malt spirit has already collected a handful of accolades on its way to becoming Wire Works Whisky. The spirits we have already launched, and the visitor destination we have created, have helped establish a strong brand reputation. We look forward to building on this with our inaugural whisky in early 2022.
