Ten Hides Distillery is a new Whisky distillery in Wiltshire alongside Salisbury Plain, launching in 2022.

Benefiting from quality local ingredients, including chalk filtered water from the Plain and premium barley, we are setting out to launch a distillery, and a brand, perfectly poised to make a unique and powerful contribution to the world of spirits, both in Wiltshire and beyond.

The name was inspired by a local village in rural Wiltshire, called Tinhead. A name, said to derive from the original ‘Ten Hides’, denoting an ancient measurement of land.

A ‘hide’ once referred to a certain number of acres, but later also demonstrated how much produce was being gathered on a particular plot. With this in mind, ‘Ten Hides’ has a wonderful dual meaning – both highlighting the provenance of our Wiltshire distillery, and emphasising the all-important premium local produce that goes into every bottle.

As whisky takes 3 years to mature and as we have such great local ingredients, we think it would be daft not to make some quality gin and rum to!

OUR STORY (SO FAR) Founder Andrew Wilson first conceived of setting up a Distillery, whilst undertaking military drills out on Salisbury Plain. A young officer in the Army, he was put through his paces on the Wiltshire chalklands. Whilst the work was often exhausting, the beauty of the land was exhilarating – vast chalk plateaus, rich wildlife and rolling views across the barley fields. Surrounded by nature, sometimes literally tasting the earth, a deep connection with the local area was born – and a dream about one day using the best local produce to create extraordinary whisky (and some rum and gin too!).

The intervening years saw Andrew travel far and wide with the Army (Afghanistan, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Germany) and latterly when he left the army, Aberdeenshire. However, when the opportunity arose to move back to Wiltshire he jumped at the chance.

Now back in Wiltshire for the last four years and again inspired by the spectacular chalk grasslands and with the dream of creating great spirits with Wiltshire produce undiminished, he set about making it a reality.

Today that journey continues – with Andrew and his team, passionate about lifting Wiltshire ingredients to a higher plain, for all to enjoy.
