The Summerton Whisky Club’s June 2019 Bottle of the Month
Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey
Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Whisky was the first truly new whiskey style to be launched in the US since prohibition, making it America’s first wheat whiskey in the process. using predominantly winter wheat to create a softer, lighter finish, Bernheim combines a mash-bill of 51% winter wheat, 39% corn and 10% malted, aged in new charred barrels for at least 7 years ensuring it shares some characteristics with Bourbon, but still has it’s own unique style.
As Double Gold Medal Winner at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition, Gold Medal winner at the International Spirits Challenge, and World’s best Wheat Whiskey at the Whisky Magazine World Whiskies Awards, when we wanted to share a great wheat whiskey, we knew Bernheim would be a great example of this style of liquid golf, as well as being a fantastic way to taste history as it was the first.
Its name comes from the iconic Old Bernheim Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, which was originally built by the Bernheim brothers, who founded the I>W. Harper brand. Bernheim Original is still aged in traditional open rickhouses and bottled on this site, but it is now distilled at the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, making part of the largest, independent, family owned producer of spirits in the USA.
Heaven Hill brands will be represented at the Summerton Whisky Festival – so if you’re not a member and fancy discovering a wonderful world of whisky, come along to the festival on 29/30 June 2019!
