Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Single Cask Exclusive
It is my pleasure to share a whisky with our European members from the brand that was named Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year at the 2020 Scottish Whisky Awards.
In 1770, The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded at Dundashill and remained active until closure at the beginning of the 20th Century. In 2014 The Glasgow Distillery Company re-opened becoming the first Single Malt Whisky Distillery in Glasgow for over 100 years, re-establishing the metropolitan Scotch Malt Whisky tradition and bringing Glasgow Malt Whisky back to life.
Founders Liam Hughes, Mike Hayward and Ian McDougall named their first three stills after family members, ‘Annie’, ‘Mhairi’ and ‘Tara’, which have been added to by ‘Margaret’ and ‘Frances’, named after two of Glasgow’s most influential female artists and sisters, Margaret and Frances MacDonald. Using only the finest ingredients, they source the exceptionally pure water of Loch Katrine, in my opinion pick fantastic casks, and always create non-chill filtered whisky that shows off its natural colour… this passion to create the best whisky they can has been rewarded with the fantastic award of Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year in 2020, and also saw them pick up best No Age Statement Single Malt prize too.
We picked three casks, distilled and filled together in early 2016 in first fill ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished in the finest virgin American white oak barrels. Importantly, these barrels, 71, 72 and 73, have very similar, if not identical, flavour profiles, which show off the signature fruity style of this distillery, to ensure everyone gets the same experience; smooth and spicy with a notes of dried raisin, fig and creamy shortbread on the nose. Sweet butterscotch, hints of fresh citrus and baked biscuit on the palate with a finish of crisp green apples and a long-lasting peppery spice.
