What does perfection taste like? We think an old abandoned sugar factory on Barbados is pretty close to creating it.
Founded in 1926 R L Seale & Company has become one of the few great independent rum distillers, still family owned and Barbados based. In 1995, much to the bemusement of many in the industry, Sir David Seale had a long-term vision to create a site big enough to house every step of premium rum production, with a desire to create some of the world's best rum. The site was a long abandoned sugar factory nestled within sugarcane plantations and production started the following year.
Sir David remains chairman, but his son Richard is the current driving force behind the distillery as Master Distiller and Blender. Under his tenure the Foursquare Rum Distillery has become as his father imagined, being awarded best rum, best rum distillery and top distiller at many of the world's top alcohol awards.
In their pursuit of perfection, Foursquare has meticulously planned every step of production and placed the environment at the heart of everything they do. On a tour of this cathedral of rum you will see one of the cleanest and most orderly facilities you'll have the pleasure of visiting, all of which is a testament to their drive for quality.
Made with molasses and limestone filtered water, pot and twin column stills are used to create the white spirit that then begins it's ageing in hand-picked barrels. These barrels are stored in massive open sided warehouses on site, where it is suggested that nine years of ageing is the equivalent of twenty-seven in Scotland.
